Dan Kimball, church leader of Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, California, and author of The Emerging Church, has posted an article in which he questions the theology behind having pews (yes, pews...) in our churches. He traces the history of pews in our churches and asks what they communicate about what we believe is important in church--suggesting that pews place primacy on the preacher and sermon, rather than on mutual fellowship with one another.
How important is our seating in church? Theologically-speaking, what's the best kind of seating? Is it time for us to move to a new kind of seating arrangement in our churches? Should we even care about seating?
